I was thinking to myself, I wonder if Mom would like to play Scrabble? Of course, it would be casual and slow and non-competitive. I was doubtful, but she has seemed bored lately. I went over in the morning, but did not bring my Scrabble board.. instead, I ran down to the toy chest a grabbed a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle and a tube with a black and white lined drawing for coloring in with colored pencils.
Well, that didn't go over well at all. She wigged out and refused to even look. No problem, I said, I just thought you might like to try something different. I realize it's too hard, but I thought maybe, something, just an activity to focus on.
I realize focus is hard now though.
After she calmed down, Dad made a comment about the length of her fingernails. It's been brought up before and she's always resisted and claimed she liked them long. But yesterday? She marched right into her bathroom and got some nail clippers and a nail file. She let me clip her nails and together we filed them.
I made a big deal about being "her manicurist," and she seemed to get a little chuckle out of that. I asked her if she might allow Maria to give her "a pedicure" the next day (today), after her bath, and she agreed to that. I'm going over shortly and we will see if that really happens!
Later in the day, the minister from their church offered to drive over to their house to pick up some paperwork so that Dad wouldn't have to drive all the way to the church to drop them off. He has been excused from tonight's monthly board meeting, which is a big relief to Mom (and a night off for me!)
Well, we agreed to have me meet the minister, and Mom called when he arrived around three fifteen in the afternoon. Well, if you didn't know anything about Mom, you would have never known she was afflicted with this disease! Lucid and chatty..
You just never know with this condition. Fickle.
I am heading over there shortly to spend a good chunk of the day with her while Dad goes to a doctors appointment in the big city. I am bringing a photo album from the late sixties / early seventies. I plan on trying to get in some housecleaning around Dad's desk area. It's a big dust bowl down there!

Thanks, Kate, for blowing away the dust bowls in and around my desk! It is really so much nicer now. Just a few days ago I said to myself, "I've got to get rid of this dust!"
The Mom had a great time yesterday (11/11/10) at the luncheon get-together at Rowena Palmer's house in Norway. This was the second one Rowena has had for ladies of the church over 70 years of age. There were six of them there and the Mom made seven. But in the drive over, Mom was very anxious and acting aggressive. She said she couldn't remember ever being there before or any of the ladies. But as I expected she had a great time after she got there.
